Chapter Fifteen

Beckett claiming me for all the school to see hadn’t made my life easier. I can’t say I honestly expected it would, but I think a part of me had still been hopeful.

The weekend had been fine.

I hadn’t left Beckett’s room until the wee hours of Saturday morning; just enough time to change before meeting Mum at Swim practice. And that had only been after Beckett demanded I shower in his bathroom with his company, but he made it very worth my while. Which made his insistence on following me to my room then to the pool slightly less annoying that it could have been.

I then spent the weekend drifting between the protection of Beckett’s arms, and the protection of Sam and Abby. I’d been kept relatively sheltered from what the rest of the school thought or felt, or their reactions. I seriously suspected that Beckett had a more-bruised-than-usual Jaeger, Rowan and their hired goons running interference to keep the worst of it away.

Jaeger certainly seemed to be focussed more on me than swim practice, much to Mum’s chagrin.

“I don’t like this, Edie,” she told me.

I nodded. “I know.”

“Are the rumours true?”

I scratched my ear lobe absently. “That probably depends on which rumours you’ve been hearing.”

“That Beckett claimed you in the school corridor and now you need round the clock guarding from Fox. And I’m not going to get started on the sordid stories that are going around about you and Beckett missing class after.”

I felt my cheeks heat, but thought I hid it pretty well. “Uh, then. Maybe. A little. Yeah.”

“Jesus,” she breathed. “Are you sure you’re safe?”

I shrugged. “I suspect I’m safer here than anywhere else. That I can live my life here.”

“I hate these Royals and their…” She sighed. “Suffice to say, the staff know a bit more about it. And no,” she added when she saw I was going to interrupt. “I’m not telling you anything except the lot of them could do with a visit from the law, but their pockets are so deep that’s not going to happen. Just… I can’t believe I’m even thinking this. Do what you need to survive.” Then she scoffed and changed her tune. “How bad can it be anyway? They’re just kids.”

I could tell she didn’t really believe that, but she was doing her damndest to make both of us believe she did. I think it said a lot about the side of the Royals I hadn’t seen that my own mother was trying to turn the other cheek and pretend it was just the usual drama of teenagers. Then again, maybe it was, and I’d blown the whole thing way out of proportion.

But on Monday, it was back to reality and, even with Jaeger and Rowan shadowing me in the morning, Isabella still made a pass at me in homegroup.

She slapped me full across the face and snapped, “How dare you, slut!”

I blinked, but held up a hand to keep Jaeger where he was. “How dare I?” I clarified.
